ABL Info: League Rules

All American Basketball League games will be played under the rules and guidelines mandated in the 1996-97 NCAA Basketball Rule Book, with detailed provisions for women's play. The following are deviations adopted by the ABL Rules Committee:
  • The official ball used for play will be a "standard" 30"-inch circumference sized ball (Not the women's NCAA ball)
  • Official playing time will consist of four (4) ten (10) minute periods
  • Overtime periods will consist of five (5) minutes
  • Player disqualification will occur on the sixth (6) personal foul
  • A thirty (30) second shot clock will be used
  • Halftime will be fifteen (15) minutes
  • Time between quarters as well as regulation play and overtime will be 130 seconds

Time-out Format
Time-out format shall remain consistent and standardized leaguewide regardless of media covering the game (i.e., television, radio, etc.).

Timeouts
Each team gets two (2) full timeouts and one (1) :20 timeout per half. In addition, there will be a media time-out at the five (5) minute mark (first dead ball after five minutes) of each quarter. If a team calls a time-out prior to the five (5) minute mark, the media time-out is eliminated in that respective quarter.

Length of time-outs
1 - 130 second media time-out per quarter at the five-minute mark
2 - 130 second time-outs per half
1 - :20 time-out per half

There will be no carryover of unused timeouts from first half to second half (including :20 time-outs). Each team gets one additional timeout for each overtime period, and can carryover unused second-half timeouts into overtime.

Other Time-out Guidelines
Teams will remain in team huddle until the horn blow for them to report back on the court after a time-out and half-time.

One horn will sound at the two minute mark (120 second).

Bonus Free Throw
One-and-One bonus begins on the seventh foul of each half. There are no two-shot fouls.

Optional Inbound Spot
During the final 1:00 minute of the game, a team may use a time-out and then request to inbound the ball from either the end line or mid-court line table side.

Player/Coach Technical Fouls (Teresa Edwards' Rule)
Technical fouls assessed to a "player-coach" will count as a technical to a player. By rule, players and coaches are disqualified on the second unsporting technical foul.
